Hirakawa replaces Ocon for Mexico City Grand Prix
Haas have replaced Esteban Ocon with reserve driver Ryo Hirakawa for the rest of the Mexico City Grand Prix weekend, after Ocon took part in Friday practice. The team has not explained the decision, which comes amid uncertainty over Ocon’s future and follows a disagreement with his race engineer about tyre strategy.
Hirakawa, 32, will make his Grand Prix debut after driving Ocon’s car in Friday’s first practice; he has twice won the World Endurance Championship with Toyota, Haas’s technical partner and title sponsor. Haas said Ocon’s replacement was not due to illness and declined to say whether Friday’s exchange was connected. Ocon is leaving Haas at the end of the year and is seeking a seat, while Brazilian rookie Rafael Camara is set to replace him.
In short
- Hirakawa replaces Ocon for the rest of the Mexico weekend.
- Haas has not explained the decision.
- Ocon’s race seat for next year remains uncertain.
Steelman: both sides, in good faith
The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.
The case for
Haas could reasonably argue that giving Hirakawa the seat is a sporting and development opportunity: his experience with Toyota may offer useful feedback, and a Grand Prix debut could help the team assess his potential. With Ocon already due to leave and a successor identified, the change may also reflect longer-term planning, though Haas has not explained its reasoning.
The case against
Ocon’s supporters could argue that replacing a driver midway through a race weekend, after he had already taken part in practice, is unfair and risks undermining his ability to compete and pursue another seat. The lack of an explanation, alongside the reported disagreement over tyre strategy, leaves legitimate questions about whether the decision was handled transparently and on sporting grounds.
