Historic swimming pond to be restored

BBC Science ·

A partnership has begun planning to restore the historic swimming pond and bath house on the Antony Estate in Cornwall, with funding from the National Lottery Community Fund. The project aims to return the site to community use, improve access to nature and support care of the local landscape.

The pond and bath house were designed by Thomas Parlby and built in the late 18th Century for swimming, including a sunken pool in the bath house. Over time, fallen leaves and mud made the pond unsuitable for swimming, and specialists are now assessing how to clear it, manage nearby trees and understand the tidal water flow. Plans include artist-led workshops and a Friends of the Pond group, with local people invited to share ideas and volunteer.
