Emma Finucane won gold in the women’s 1,000m time trial to become the first Welsh woman to claim three gold medals at a single Commonwealth Games. The result strengthens her status as one of Wales’ leading cyclists and leaves her one victory away from becoming the most successful Welsh woman in Commonwealth Games history.

The 23-year-old Carmarthen rider, already an Olympic champion, had won team sprint gold on Thursday and individual sprint gold on Friday. She set a time of 1 minute 5.285 seconds in the event’s Commonwealth Games debut, ahead of England’s Sophie Capewell and New Zealand’s Ellesse Andrews; Welsh team-mate Megan Barker finished fifth in 1:06.345. Finucane will compete in the women’s keirin on Sunday.
