‘History Of Concrete’ Rocks IFC Center As ‘Daniel And The Fiery Furnace’ Brings Biblical Heat To Top 10 — Specialty Box Office

Deadline · 1 hour ago

John Wilson's The History Of Concrete achieved a record-breaking opening at the IFC Center in New York, grossing $90,000 over three days and setting the venue's second-highest weekend record in its 21-year history. The success reflects strong audience demand for the acclaimed documentary, driven largely by Wilson's celebrity status from his HBO series How To With John Wilson and his local profile as co-founder of a micro-cinema in Queens. Nearly all available screenings sold out, with additional shows added throughout the weekend to meet demand.

The film's distributor, Magnolia Pictures, deliberately limited screenings between the Sundance premiere and opening weekend to build anticipation, proving an effective strategy. The audience skewed towards ages 20 to mid-40s. Beyond this headline success, the specialty box-office landscape showed strength across diverse genres: Magnolia's Late Fame continued its run with solid numbers, whilst two faith-based films competed in the top ten—Angel Studio's Runner at number six with $3.18 million in its second weekend, and EKKL Entertainment's Daniel And The Fiery Furnace at number seven with $3.14 million in its opening weekend. The History Of Concrete expands to approximately 40 screens across 15 markets next week, with a wider rollout planned for early October.
