Hollywood institution among more than a dozen California restaurants to make America’s top 100
California led OpenTable’s 2026 ranking of America’s top 100 restaurants, with 19 entries, more than any other state. The result highlights the breadth of the state’s dining scene, from long-established Hollywood restaurants to contemporary seafood and heritage cooking.
Los Angeles restaurants Musso & Frank Grill, Providence and Dunsmoor were among those recognised. Musso & Frank has served diners since 1919 and remains family-run; Providence is a three-Michelin-starred seafood restaurant that opened in 2005, while Dunsmoor opened in 2022. The wider California list includes restaurants in San Diego, Costa Mesa, Anaheim, Palm Springs, Carlsbad and San Francisco; OpenTable said its rankings drew on more than 11 million verified diner reviews and dining metrics collected from September 2025 to August 2026.
In short
- California had 19 restaurants in OpenTable’s top 100.
- Three Los Angeles restaurants made the ranking.
- Rankings used more than 11 million verified diner reviews.
Explained simply
OpenTable is an online service for booking restaurant tables and collecting diner reviews. Its annual US list draws on reviews and other dining measures, offering one way to compare restaurants across the country.
California has a large and varied restaurant scene, including long-running local institutions and newer restaurants. In Los Angeles, Musso & Frank Grill has been serving diners since 1919, while Providence focuses on seafood and Dunsmoor is a more recent arrival. The state’s dining scene also extends well beyond Los Angeles, with restaurants in cities and towns across California.
Restaurant rankings can bring attention to both established names and newer places, and may help diners decide where to eat. They are based on the measures used by the ranking, so they offer one perspective on a much wider dining scene.
