Hong Kong grandmother gets 20 days for slapping 5-year-old girl at play area
A 68-year-old Hong Kong grandmother was jailed for 20 days after slapping a five-year-old girl at a shopping centre play area. The incident began with a disagreement between the children over a basketball, and the court said the grandmother should not have taken her anger out on the girl.
Leung Lai-ha pleaded guilty to assault, saying she acted on impulse and wanted to teach the girl a lesson. Her daughter and the girl’s mother also admitted taking part in a public-place fight; both received one-year good behaviour bonds, with a HK$1,000 penalty if they commit a similar offence during that period. The girl had facial redness, while Leung suffered minor scratches.
