Jada Sellers, a 17-year-old honours student from Baltimore, died after being shot by her ex-boyfriend, 18-year-old Christian Hursey, who took his own life three weeks later as police attempted to arrest him. The case has drawn renewed attention to domestic violence and gun access, as it later emerged that Hursey's own childhood was marked by extreme violence: his father murdered his mother in 2017 after years of documented abuse and repeated protective orders that failed to stop him.

Sellers was shot in the throat and abdomen in the early hours of 31 July on Lyndhurst Street after leaving a property, with surveillance footage showing a man opening fire as she tried to exit through a gate. She died in hospital nearly two weeks later, surrounded by family. Police identified Hursey as the prime suspect and, on 20 August, sent officers and a SWAT team to his Baltimore County home to serve a search warrant; they heard a single gunshot and found him dead of a self-inflicted wound. Investigators subsequently uncovered that Hursey's mother, Chinika, had been killed by his father, Dominick Hursey, in April 2017, after she had repeatedly sought protective orders warning she feared he would kill her — a case that later featured in a BBC investigation into gaps allowing domestic abusers to keep access to firearms.
