An offender now aged 70 has been convicted of a 1981 rape in Sheffield, with the conviction resulting from a cold case review that matched DNA evidence from the crime scene to the national database nearly three decades after the assault. The attack took place in the victim's home where her three-year-old daughter was present throughout the incident. The offender threatened the victim with a screwdriver during the attack.

The offender was already incarcerated on 11 life sentences for serious crimes committed primarily in Greater Manchester during the 1980s. His criminal record demonstrates a pattern of extreme violence, including an incident during his 1988 arrest when he fired upon police officers. The victim, who attended court with her now-adult daughter, stated she believes the offender poses too significant a risk for release. Law enforcement officials characterised him as a prolific offender whose actions have repeatedly demonstrated serious threats to public safety, particularly to women.
