A worker in his 50s was killed after being struck by a truck at the United Wambo open-cut coal mine near Warkworth, in the Hunter Valley region of New South Wales, on Monday afternoon. The incident prompted mine operator Glencore to suspend all operations at the site while emergency services and the company respond, underscoring the ongoing safety risks faced by workers at large-scale mining operations.

Emergency services were called to the scene shortly after 1pm following reports of a crash involving mobile mining equipment, but the worker died at the scene. Glencore chief executive Peter Sharpe confirmed the death and offered condolences to the man's family, friends and colleagues, describing it as tragic news for the workforce. The United Wambo mine produces around 3.5 million tonnes of coal annually, and the company said its immediate focus was on providing support in the aftermath.
