Hot-tempered NJ mayor loses reelection weeks after charging at critic during town meeting
Pemberton Mayor Matthew Bianchini has conceded defeat to Democratic challenger Belinda Fontanez, weeks after a confrontation with a critic at a town meeting drew widespread attention. The result ends his bid for election in his own right, after he had been appointed to serve the remainder of a predecessor’s term.
Unofficial Burlington County results showed Bianchini with 1,983 votes, just over 30 per cent of the ballot. At an October committee hearing, he lunged towards resident Michael Sawka after an alleged gesture that Bianchini said was directed at his daughter; others restrained him. Bianchini later said he had “snapped” and argued his actions were justified, while acknowledging they were probably wrong.
In short
- Belinda Fontanez defeated Mayor Matthew Bianchini.
- Bianchini received just over 30 per cent of the vote.
- His outburst at a town meeting had drawn scrutiny.
Explained simply
Pemberton is a township in Burlington County, New Jersey, governed by a mayor and a local committee. Matthew Bianchini became mayor after being appointed to complete his predecessor’s term, and was then seeking election to the post in his own right.
Local committee hearings give residents a chance to raise concerns and speak with officials. A confrontation at one such meeting in October brought attention to Bianchini’s conduct and formed part of the context for the mayoral contest.
