An inquest jury has concluded that Peter Lynch, jailed for his part in the riot outside the Holiday Inn Express in Manvers, Rotherham, took his own life while in custody. The 61-year-old was found dead in his cell at HMP Moorland on 19 October 2024, two days after being reported for alleged racist comments made to prison officers and while awaiting a governor's adjudication on the matter. The case has drawn attention both because of Lynch's high-profile role in the 2024 disorder and because the coroner raised, and the prison subsequently addressed, concerns about how such incidents are handled.

Lynch had been sentenced to two years and eight months for his involvement in the August 2024 riot, during which 64 police officers and several police dogs and horses were injured. The inquest, held over two-and-a-half weeks at Doncaster Coroner's Court, heard he made comments about asylum seekers to officers on his way to a drugs test, was handed adjudication papers through his cell door the following day, and was found unresponsive at roll-call the next morning. Senior coroner Nicola Mundy said she was satisfied the prison had since improved its procedures for engaging with prisoners facing adjudication and for responding when an inmate is found unresponsive, after raising concerns about delays and confusion among staff at the time.
