Households urged to stockpile on 14 items as Brits told ‘be ready’
The Government has launched a three-year “Be Ready” campaign urging UK households to prepare for emergencies such as extreme weather and cyberattacks that could disrupt essential services. Its checklist recommends keeping enough supplies for three days, giving households time to manage while support reaches people most in need.
The 14 suggested items include water, food, hygiene products, blankets, batteries, a torch, an FM radio, a power bank, cash, identity documents, a first aid kit, medication, and supplies for babies and pets. The guidance advises checking what is already at home, building up supplies gradually, reviewing them every six months and sharing contact details with neighbours. It also says people should locate their home’s water, gas and electricity shut-offs; gas must only be turned back on by a qualified engineer.
