How A Tray Of Bloody Oysters Helped ‘The Diplomat’ Find “A Real Spine” For Season 4 – The Backstory

Deadline · 2 hours ago

The creative team behind Netflix's political thriller *The Diplomat* has revealed that a dinner scene featuring bloodied oysters, filmed for season three, became the blueprint for season four's central theme: how two political couples cope with the same crises in strikingly different ways. Showrunner Debora Cahn told Deadline that the scene, in which the Penns and Wylers navigate marital strain alongside a national security crisis, proved so effective that it shaped the emotional backbone of the upcoming series, which returns on 15 October.

The scene, from episode six of season three, involves President Grace Penn (Allison Janney) and her husband Todd (Bradley Whitford), alongside Vice President Hal Wyler (Rufus Sewell) and Ambassador Kate Wyler (Keri Russell), as they discuss a crisis over oysters that turn out to be bloodied after Todd cuts himself shucking them. Some 425 real oysters and 72 fake ones were used in filming, with cast members including Whitford and Janney praising small prop details, such as a squashed pretzel bag, for grounding the drama in domesticity. The show received seven Emmy nominations, including nods for all four leads and Outstanding Drama Series.
