How big and powerful is SpaceX’s Starship rocket?
SpaceX’s Starship is the tallest and most powerful rocket flown, designed to carry large payloads and eventually people and cargo beyond Earth orbit. Its scale is intended to support those missions, while recovery and reuse of both stages could make the system more practical.
The two-stage vehicle stands 407 feet tall: the 236.2-foot Super Heavy booster has 33 engines and 18.1 million pounds-force of liftoff thrust, while the upper stage is 170.6 feet long. Starship carries six engines and has about 3.5 million pounds-force of thrust; together, the stages hold 5,250 metric tons of propellant. NASA’s planned lunar missions will require multiple tanker flights and an orbital fuel depot so the Starship lander can refuel before meeting the Orion crew.
In short
- Starship stands 407 feet tall.
- Its booster produces 18.1 million pounds-force of liftoff thrust.
- NASA lunar missions will rely on refuelling in orbit.
Explained simply
SpaceX is a US company founded by Elon Musk that builds rockets and spacecraft. Starship is its large, two-stage launch system: the lower booster helps lift the upper spacecraft away from Earth, and both are designed to return for reuse.
The scale gives Starship the thrust and fuel capacity to carry heavy cargo, with the longer-term aim of taking people and supplies beyond Earth orbit. NASA plans to use a version of the spacecraft to land astronauts on the Moon, but it will need fuel delivered to an orbital depot by several tanker flights before it can make the journey.
