Originally marketed as OMNIMAX in the 1970s and renamed in the 1990s, Dome theatres have historically been featured in science museums and educational centres rather than commercial cinemas, though they are now gaining attention alongside other IMAX formats.

IMAX Dome theatres use fisheye lenses to provide a 180-degree field of view across a domed ceiling stretching nearly 100 feet in diameter, compared to standard vertical IMAX screens of approximately 52 by 72 feet. These systems are primarily found in museums worldwide, including locations in France, Germany, Sweden, Canada and throughout the United States, and predominantly screen educational content such as nature documentaries, though recent Christopher Nolan films including Oppenheimer and The Odyssey have been shown in some Dome locations globally.
