Nintendo has set a firm cut-off of mid-February 2027 for supplying new original Nintendo Switch consoles to European retailers, a change driven by EU rules requiring user-replaceable batteries. However, this does not mark the end of the console itself: Nintendo has confirmed the eShop, Nintendo Switch Online and other services will continue "for the foreseeable future," meaning existing owners will still be able to play games, use accessories and access online features well beyond that date.

The original Switch remains Nintendo's best-selling console ever, with 156.59 million units sold worldwide as of June 2026, and it continued shifting hardware and tens of millions of software units even after the Switch 2's launch. This resilience is partly due to the Switch 2's broad backward compatibility, which Nintendo says has smoothed the generational transition rather than forcing a clean break; titles such as Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream, for instance, are played on Switch 2 by around 40% of buyers. While Nintendo continues to release occasional first-party games for the original Switch, such as July's Rhythm Heaven Groove, none are currently scheduled beyond it, suggesting support will taper gradually rather than end abruptly, much as it did with older platforms like the Wii Shop Channel.
