Vintage names return as former Australian baby-name favourites fade

Daily Mail ·

Australia’s baby-name rankings show a shift in taste: older names are returning while names popular in recent decades are losing ground. The changes matter because names can reflect how parents think about social identity and the future, as well as changing cultural influences.

Oliver was the most popular boys’ name in 2025 for the 12th year running, followed by Noah and Theodore. Charlotte reclaimed the girls’ top spot from Isla, while Muhammad rose from 100th in 2013 to 38th in 2025; Daisy, Elsie, Henry, George and Arthur have also climbed. By contrast, Jessica, Karen, Michael and several other once-popular names have dropped out of the top 100.

  • Oliver topped Australia’s boys’ names for the 12th year.
  • Charlotte reclaimed the girls’ top spot from Isla.
  • Vintage names are rising as several past favourites fade.
