Australian Taxation Office data shows that high incomes are appearing beyond the country’s traditional wealthy suburbs, including in regional towns, outer-suburban growth areas and mining communities. The Mornington Peninsula postcode containing Portsea had the highest average taxable income, while the figures also highlight how averages can obscure what typical residents earn.

Its average taxable income was $321,988, but the median taxpayer income was $75,808; Toorak and Vaucluse showed similar gaps between their averages and medians. By median income, Rozelle and Balmain, Double Bay, Darling Point and Canberra’s inner south ranked highly. Karratha’s median was about $142,000, while the national median taxable income reached $58,739 in 2023–24, up from $52,338 five years earlier.

In short

  • Portsea had Australia’s highest average taxable income at $321,988.
  • Its median taxpayer income was far lower, at $75,808.
  • Mining towns and regional areas also ranked among high-income locations.

Explained simply

Australia’s tax office publishes income figures by postcode, showing how taxable incomes differ between suburbs and regions. The figures include both averages and medians: a few very high incomes can lift an average, while the median is the middle income, with half of taxpayers above it and half below.

The data covers places with very different economies, from established city suburbs to mining towns and growing outer suburbs. Mining communities such as Karratha can have high incomes because of the jobs based there, while wealthier postcodes may also contain a mix of incomes.

These figures can help show where taxpayers report higher incomes, but they do not describe every resident or measure wealth such as property and savings. Comparing averages with medians gives a fuller picture of how income is distributed within a postcode.
