The actor, nominated for a best actor Emmy for the show’s third season, believes its evolving character dynamics and blend of political suspense with sophisticated drama have kept the work creatively engaging.

Sewell plays Hal Wyler opposite Keri Russell’s diplomat Kate Wyler, portraying a husband whose political ambition often conflicts with marital loyalty. In season three, President Grace Penn selects Hal as vice-president over Kate, separating the couple for much of the season and altering their power balance; Sewell says this shift helped prevent the series from repeating itself. Production on the fourth season has now finished, while the programme has gained wider Emmy recognition in acting, writing and other categories.
