iPhone Pro offers stronger zoom, while Duo uses its fold for camera features

Engadget ·

Apple’s $1,999 iPhone Duo has two 48-megapixel rear cameras, but lacks the dedicated telephoto lens and variable aperture found on the iPhone 18 Pro. That makes the Pro better suited to conventional photography, especially distant subjects, while the Duo trades some camera hardware for features that use its foldable design.

Both phones can produce a 2x optical-quality view by cropping the main sensor, but the Pro also offers a 4x telephoto lens and an 8x optical-quality crop; the Duo’s optical-quality zoom tops out at 2x. The Duo’s fixed aperture still supports portrait-mode blur, and its fold can prop it up for group photos or video calls. Its outer screen can serve as a viewfinder for the rear cameras, and features include automatic group-photo timing, shared FaceTime framing and Peanuts animations to attract children’s attention.

  • The $1,999 iPhone Duo lacks the Pro’s telephoto lens and variable aperture.
  • Its optical-quality zoom reaches 2x, compared with the Pro’s 8x.
  • Foldable screens enable hands-free framing, group photos and video-call features.

The iPhone Pro and iPhone Duo are two Apple phones with different designs and camera equipment. A telephoto lens helps a camera capture distant subjects, while aperture controls how much light enters the lens and can affect the background blur in a photo.

The Pro has a dedicated telephoto lens and a variable aperture; the Duo has two rear cameras and a screen that folds. The Duo’s design can also act as a stand, and its outer screen can show a preview when someone takes a photo with the rear cameras.

The choice reflects different priorities in phone design: camera hardware for photographing faraway subjects, or a foldable form that can support hands-free photos and video calls.

Both sides, in good faith

The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.

The case for

The iPhone 18 Pro is the stronger choice for people who prioritise conventional photography: its dedicated telephoto lens and variable aperture offer more flexibility, particularly for distant subjects. If camera performance is central to a phone’s value, those hardware advantages may matter more than fold-specific conveniences.

The case against

The iPhone Duo offers a different kind of camera value by using its foldable design to support group photos, video calls and rear-camera selfies with the outer screen as a viewfinder. For people who mainly photograph nearby subjects and value those flexible shooting features, its 2x optical-quality zoom and portrait blur may be enough without the Pro’s extra telephoto reach.
