How The Remarried Empress stars Shin Min-a, Ju Ji-hoon and cast brought the hit webtoon to life
Disney+’s Korean fantasy romance *The Remarried Empress*, starring Shin Min-a, Ju Ji-hoon, Lee Jong-suk and Lee Se-young, adapts a hugely popular web novel and webtoon. It follows Empress Navier after her husband falls for another woman and demands a divorce; Navier agrees on condition she can marry a neighbouring crown prince, setting off a royal scandal. The adaptation’s scale of existing interest raises expectations for how it will translate the story to screen.
Director Cho Su-won said he aimed to balance the web novel’s serious tone with the webtoon’s brighter, more playful approach while staying faithful to the source. Shin Min-a described balancing Navier’s duties as empress with her feelings after betrayal, while Lee Jong-suk said he was already a fan of the original. The 10-episode series was brought forward by a day after positive reactions to its first three episodes at the Busan International Film Festival; the webtoon has nearly 3 billion views across more than 10 languages.
