Spotify has added a settings toggle that lets users disable music videos across the app, addressing a long-standing complaint about videos playing automatically whenever an artist uploaded one for a track. Previously there was no straightforward way to turn this off, and the autoplay behaviour irritated users by consuming extra bandwidth and battery, while videos sometimes featured audio noticeably different from the original studio track.

The new option sits within a "Videos and Canvas" section of the settings, alongside separate toggles for Canvas (animated album art) and video podcasts, which can be switched to audio-only. On mobile, it's accessed via the profile icon, then Settings and privacy, then Content and display; on desktop, via the profile icon and Settings. Testing confirmed that disabling the feature removes video icons from playlists, albums and artist pages, leaving only a "Switch to video" button in the Now Playing sidebar that remains inactive unless videos are re-enabled.
