Check your smart TV for a camera and review its privacy controls
Built-in cameras are rare on modern smart TVs, but checking whether a set has one can help owners make informed privacy choices. A camera does not mean someone is watching, though internet-connected devices can be vulnerable and camera features may work in different ways.
Check the TV’s model number against the manufacturer’s specifications, then inspect the frame for a lens or a detachable camera accessory. If you find one, look for a physical shutter, disconnect an external camera, or cover a built-in lens without blocking sensors or vents; also review camera settings and app permissions. Microphones and automatic content recognition collect data separately, so camera controls alone will not stop those practices.
In short
- Most modern smart TVs do not have built-in cameras.
- Check the model specifications and inspect the frame or accessories.
- Review camera, microphone and viewing-data privacy controls separately.
