Google opens SynthID watermark detector for public media checks

Engadget ·

Google has made SynthID Detector available to the public, allowing people to check whether images, videos or audio contain watermarks associated with AI-generated media. The tool could help users verify some online content without asking an AI system to assess its own output, but it does not identify all AI-made media.

Users upload a file to SynthID.com and receive a result within seconds. The detector checks for SynthID marks used by Google and partners including OpenAI, NVIDIA and Kakao; Apple support is still in development. It requires sign-in and allows about 10 checks a day. Because it looks only for specific watermarks, it may miss media from tools that do not use SynthID, and it does not show which parts of a file were AI-generated.

  • Google’s SynthID Detector is now open to everyone.
  • It checks for watermarks in images, videos and audio.
  • It cannot detect AI media without supported watermarks.
