During the interview, she corrected a persistent online claim that she was mentored at Nottingham's Television Workshop by fellow Nottingham native Samantha Morton, clarifying that the pair never crossed paths there and only became close later in their careers.

McClure explained that she and Morton did not properly connect until they separately led instalments of Dominic Savage's I Am… series, after which they had a long phone conversation and stayed in touch. She trained at the Television Workshop, a Midlands scheme for working-class children, until she was 21, having been unable to afford a place she had earned at the Italia Conti academy.
