Eddie Howe has left Newcastle United after a disappointing Premier League campaign and a transfer window shaped by the need to sell players, with Matthias Jaissle reportedly set to replace him. The departure raises questions about whether the club’s Saudi-backed owners can still deliver their ambition of making Newcastle one of the world’s leading clubs by 2030, particularly as financial rules limit spending.

Howe ended Newcastle’s 70-year wait for a domestic trophy by winning last season’s Carabao Cup, but this season the club finished 12th, exited the Champions League in the last 16 and lost heavily to Manchester City in the EFL Cup semi-finals. Newcastle sold Alexander Isak to Liverpool for £125m last September and have since reportedly lost Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali, while Bruno Guimaraes may also leave; Howe is understood to have told the club of his intention to go two weeks ago.
