Funeral director Robert Bush has been jailed for 20 years after admitting 67 offences connected to the mistreatment of bodies and defrauding bereaved families through his Hull business, Legacy Independent Funeral Services. The case matters because hundreds of families were affected, with relatives discovering that loved ones had not received the care, burial or cremation they had been promised.

Bush pleaded guilty to offences spanning 12 years, including 30 counts of preventing a lawful and decent burial. Police found bodies in varying stages of decomposition, while families were given incorrect ashes; among the victims was Sunny Beverley-Conlin, a baby miscarried at 18 weeks whose remains were kept at the premises for almost two years. Bush also spent more than £42,000 on holidays during the period of the fraud, including a £3,000 trip to Arizona before his arrest.
