Hundreds of people gathered on Therfield Heath in Royston, Hertfordshire, to watch a partial solar eclipse, with the local astronomical society distributing protective viewing glasses. More than 90% of the Sun was obscured by the Moon, making it the most significant eclipse visible from the UK since 1999 and drawing a strong community response.

Experts warned that looking directly at the Sun could cause permanent eye damage, while demand for specialist glasses left many retailers sold out. Some spectators used colanders as pinhole projectors instead, and attendees noted that the next comparable eclipse is not expected until 2099.
