About 200 people, including children, found at suspected illegal South African centre
About 200 people, including children, were found at a suspected illegal rehabilitation centre run from a church in Waterval B, Mpumalanga, South Africa. Officials described the conditions as “grossly inhumane”; a pastor and his wife have been arrested on suspicion of kidnapping and other offences.
Inspectors said the rooms held far more people than intended, with 37 sharing one room, limited sanitation and locked water taps. Some people were reportedly chained together, and officials found sores on some residents; 14 were taken for medical treatment. Those at the property reportedly paid R3,000 a month, and the couple are expected in court on Monday.
