Aftershock near Korumburra felt by hundreds south-east of Melbourne

Daily Mail ·

Hundreds of people reported feeling an earthquake near Korumburra, south-east of Melbourne, on Saturday afternoon. Geoscience Australia classified it as an aftershock of the magnitude 4.8 quake that struck the area on 3 October, showing that noticeable shaking can continue after a major tremor.

The latest quake was recorded at a depth of 5km near Kardella South, and Geoscience Australia received at least 200 felt reports. An expert said aftershocks may continue for hours, days or weeks, with most too small to feel; the Gippsland Basin has experienced other significant quakes, including magnitude 4.7 events in 2009 and a magnitude 4.4 quake in 2011.
