‘Hungry to win’ – Villa’s Konsa joins Arsenal in £55m deal

BBC Sport · 3 hours ago

Ezri Konsa has completed a £55m move from Aston Villa to Premier League champions Arsenal, signing a four-year contract with the option of a further year. The England defender said it was "a proud moment" to join "one of the best teams in the world", with the deal following weeks of negotiation between the two clubs, who had initially disagreed on his valuation. The signing strengthens Arsenal's defence at a time when regular centre-backs William Saliba and right-back Jurrien Timber are both sidelined by injury.

Konsa, 28, made 286 appearances for Villa after joining from Brentford in 2019, helping the club win the Europa League in May and reach the Champions League via a fourth-placed Premier League finish last season. He was also an ever-present for England at this summer's World Cup, where Thomas Tuchel's side reached the semi-finals before beating France in the bronze-medal match. The deal could earn Villa up to £4m in add-ons, and Konsa said he had discussed the move with current Arsenal players including Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka during the tournament; Arsenal have now spent over £100m this window, also signing Bruno Guimaraes and Christos Tzolis.
