Samantha Strable, an American former influencer who drew international criticism after filming herself taking a baby wombat from its mother in Australia, has received a suspended US jail sentence for an unrelated hunting offence in Wyoming. The case matters because it follows widespread outrage over her treatment of the wombat and concerns about her conduct around wildlife.

Strable, 26, pleaded guilty to hunting without a guide and was given 180 days in jail, suspended, along with 12 months’ probation and about AU$800 in fines and court fees. Seven other charges were dropped, including allegations involving hunting without a licence or out of season and false statements about residence. She said the wombat incident had been an attempt to help the animal, while Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese publicly condemned the video after it showed the distressed joey separated from its mother.
