Huntsville, Alabama's music office has released a report showing the city's music industry has grown substantially since 2018, when the establishment of a dedicated Huntsville Music Office and investment in venues began. The Economic Impact of Huntsville Music Report, compiled with creative economy consultancy Sound Diplomacy, aims to demonstrate to other US cities how targeted investment in local music ecosystems can translate into significant job creation and economic output, positioning Huntsville as a model for smaller markets seeking to compete with major music hubs like Nashville and Atlanta.

The report found music sector jobs grew 145% since 2018, alongside a nearly 40% rise in direct economic output and a 35% increase in gross value added. A key driver was the $40 million, 8,000-capacity Orion Amphitheater, opened in 2022, which drew over 150,000 non-local visitors and generated $85.2 million in economic output and 624 jobs in its first 18 months. The downtown Von Braun Center supported 3,590 jobs and $37.5 million in impact in 2025 alone, while the new South Star Music Festival contributed $24.1 million despite a weather-related cancellation. Matt Manderella, Huntsville's first music officer since 2022, said the figures prove the city's music strategy is "not only working, but exceeding" expectations.

  • Huntsville, Alabama's music sector jobs grew 145% since 2018.
  • $40m Orion Amphitheater drove much of the economic boost.
  • City hopes other places will copy its music-investment model.
