The piece argues that although power pop was a dominant force in mainstream music that year, several standout tracks from well-known and lesser-known artists alike have been overlooked by modern listeners, making the case for revisiting them.

The four songs are "Airport" by The Motors, which reached No. 4 on the UK Singles chart but never charted in the US; "Take Me I'm Yours" by Squeeze, a synth-driven track that hit No. 19 in the UK that summer; "I Need To Know" by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, a minor hit that peaked at No. 41 on the Billboard Hot 100; and "What Do I Get?" by Buzzcocks, the band's UK chart debut at No. 37, later featured in the 2001 film Ghost World.
