I developed tinnitus five years ago and it’s getting worse. It makes me dizzy, I can’t sleep and my GP tells me nothing can be done. DR SCURR reveals why people suddenly develop the condition… and why distraction is the key treatment
The reader’s tinnitus began after Covid and has worsened, bringing dizziness, sleep disruption and a new crackling sound in one ear. Dr Scurr says tinnitus after respiratory infections is common, though its causes are not fully understood, and recommends ways to reduce its impact rather than simply accepting that nothing can be done.
A soft background sound at night may help by gently diverting attention; CBT for insomnia or tinnitus may also reduce sleep problems and distress. The crackling could relate to Eustachian tube problems or middle ear muscle contractions, so an ENT assessment is suggested. The article also answers a separate question about darker urine and reduced night-time urination, advising a three-day fluid and bladder diary and GP checks if urine output is low.
In short
- Soft background sound may make tinnitus less intrusive at night.
- CBT can help with tinnitus distress and sleep.
- An ENT review could investigate the new crackling sound.
