Sheffield is hosting the British Transplant Games from Thursday to Sunday, bringing together around 2,800 transplant recipients, living donors and donor families to compete across 26 sports and raise awareness of organ donation. Among the competitors is Glyn Davies, 64, who received a kidney from his wife Claire, 63, in an operation carried out on 13 February 2025 after he developed the rare autoimmune disease ANCA vasculitis; he says he has since fully regained his energy and confidence.

Now in its 48th year, the Games feature sports including athletics, golf, swimming and snooker, and also include participants such as Ellie Greenwood, 21, a swimmer who received a liver transplant as a baby, and brothers Harry, 10, and Max, 13, who both underwent liver transplants due to a rare genetic condition. Organisers say the event also encourages conversations about organ donation, which NHS Blood and Transplant says remains urgently needed, with more than 8,000 people currently on the waiting list.
