Nigeria's Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has dismissed more than 40 staff members over the past three years for alleged corruption and financial misconduct, chairman Ola Olukoyede has revealed. He disclosed the sackings at a briefing in Abuja assessing the agency's record since he took charge in October 2023, saying more than five of those dismissed are already facing prosecution while further case files are being prepared. The disclosure is notable because the EFCC is itself Nigeria's lead body for investigating fraud, money laundering and corruption among politicians, officials and businesspeople, making internal wrongdoing especially damaging to its credibility.

Olukoyede said reforms under his leadership included renaming the agency's Department of Internal Affairs the "Department of Ethics and Integrity" and introducing a policy requiring officers to declare gifts above an unspecified threshold, including from relatives abroad. He also reported record results for the commission, recovering 1.23 trillion naira (about $925m/£683m) with a conviction rate above 75%, and said it received 49,673 petitions, investigated 39,615 cases and secured 10,872 convictions between October 2023 and July 2026, with 1,370 convictions from 1,889 filings in the first half of 2026 alone. The EFCC did not provide further details to the BBC on the specific corruption allegations against its former staff, and noted its caseload is increasingly shifting towards cybercrime and fraud.
