Punk musician and writer Henry Rollins has announced a new memoir, Bait Dog Boy, due for publication next year through Random House. Described by the publisher as "a searing memoir of a broken childhood and the hope of escaping it," the book marks the first time Rollins has written at length about his difficult upbringing, an experience he has reportedly spent much of his life trying to avoid discussing.

The memoir traces Rollins's childhood and adolescence in Washington, D.C., where he was raised amid what the synopsis calls "an almost total vacuum of love," shuttled between indifferent parents before later finding his way into music as frontman of Black Flag and the Rollins Band. The publisher frames the book as a coming-of-age story with the rawness of a punk anthem, exploring how Rollins sought to adapt to and ultimately overcome an environment seemingly determined to break him.
