Katie Boulter said she will not wear her wedding ring during matches, having learned from Andy Murray’s widely reported experience of briefly losing his after tying it to his shoelaces. The British player, newly married to Australia’s Alex de Minaur, is returning quickly to competition ahead of the US Open and says playing in the United States helps her adjust to its distinctive conditions.

Boulter and De Minaur held a private English ceremony for eight people, followed by a larger celebration in Tuscany in July; she said De Minaur’s impromptu speech left her crying. Ranked 60th, Boulter lost early in Washington, Toronto and Cincinnati and will face American wildcard Carol Young Suh Lee, ranked 143rd, in the US Open first round. Four Britons qualified for the main draw, the most at an overseas Grand Slam since the 1988 Australian Open.
