Joshua Foster, a 37-year-old KPMG AI director from Essex, pleaded guilty at Paphos District Court to causing the death of his two-year-old son, who fell from a fourth-floor window at the King Evelthon Hotel in Cyprus on 12 July. The incident occurred on the first day of their holiday when Foster placed his son on a windowsill whilst waiting for a lift, believing the window was closed; the boy fell backwards and plunged 33 feet to his death. Foster has admitted to a momentary lapse of attention, and his guilty plea was made partly to avoid a lengthy, traumatic trial for the family.

Foster faces a maximum sentence of four years in prison or a minimum fine, with sentencing scheduled for 5 October after a two-week wait. He was initially held on remand without charge for eight days and has since paid €30,000 (£25,750) in bail. Toxicology tests revealed a small quantity of alcohol in his system, equivalent to one or two drinks. Foster was temporarily allowed to leave Cyprus to bury his son in August, and his wife—a 38-year-old health professional—returned to the UK with their five-year-old daughter at the end of July. This incident was the third British tourist death at the five-star hotel in four years.
