I Spied on the WoW: Forever Beta as an Invisible God with the Blizzard Devs Who Made It

Polygon ·

WoW: Forever is Blizzard’s reimagining of the original World of Warcraft, aiming to preserve its early pacing while adding ideas that could not be included in the 2004 game. Designers Tim Jones and Kris Zierhut say the project grew from players’ affection for how classic WoW played, alongside a desire to revisit choices the original team felt had not worked well.

During a beta tour, the reporter observed players gathering for a new oversized Hogger boss and explored areas not yet available to them. Forever removes some technical quirks, including the original game’s two-second server heartbeat, and expands the role of professions and crafting. The developers say they want the project to remain small and responsive to its community.

In short

  • Blizzard is reimagining classic World of Warcraft.
  • The project revisits ideas and design choices from 2004.
  • Developers want Forever to stay small and community-focused.
