Irish Olympian Ciara Mageean dies aged 34 after bowel cancer battle

Irish athlete Ciara Mageean has died aged 34 after battling stage 4 bowel cancer. In a final interview, the two-time Olympian spoke about facing the prospect of not reaching 40 or having the family she had hoped for, while expressing gratitude for the good things in her life.

Mageean said she had undergone almost 20 rounds of chemotherapy and had read that 10 to 15 per cent of people with stage 4 cancer survive. She represented Ireland at the Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020 Olympics, won European 1,500-metre gold in 2024, and was ruled out of that year’s Olympics by an Achilles injury. She married her long-term partner, Thomas Moran, last month and wrote a memoir, *My Greatest Race*, as a legacy.
