Hannah Einbinder discusses the end of HBO comedy Hacks and her role in Jane Schoenbrun’s queer meta-horror Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma, which became a breakout film at Cannes. She says the film’s exploration of shame, repression and dissociation resonated personally, helping her reflect more openly on desire, boundaries and difficult experiences.

Einbinder plays a film-maker obsessed with reviving a slasher franchise’s reclusive star, played by Gillian Anderson, as reality and fantasy increasingly blur. She is known for portraying Ava Daniels opposite Jean Smart’s Deborah Vance in Hacks, where their fraught but increasingly vital relationship gave the comedy much of its emotional power; Schoenbrun cast Einbinder partly for her striking physicality.
