Three veteran Daily Mail journalists have shared their recollections of the 11 September 2001 attacks on the Deep Dive podcast to mark the atrocity's 25th anniversary. Former US Correspondent Sarah Chalmers, the only Daily Mail reporter in New York at the time, gave a first-hand account of the chaos that followed the strikes on the Twin Towers, describing scenes of panic, destruction and fear as she filed the paper's earliest dispatches from the city.

Chalmers recalled watching a plane fly into the South Tower while stood in her office, and described the ensuing chaos as the city filled with disorientated, ash-covered survivors fleeing on foot after bridges and tunnels were shut down. She later reached Ground Zero, likening it to a "war zone" strewn with personal belongings, and spoke of rescuers emerging repeatedly to report finding no survivors among the debris. Nearly 2,750 people died at the World Trade Center. The podcast also features former Chief Reporter David Williams, who later spent four months covering the Afghanistan invasion, and former Chief Crime Correspondent Stephen Wright, who flew to New York on one of the first flights after the attacks.
