Jethro Tull frontman Ian Anderson named singer-songwriter Roy Harper as an unsung musical hero, praising his influence despite his limited mainstream fame. Anderson said Harper’s direct, unconventional creativity offered a contrast to the complicated touring life and success enjoyed by major rock bands.

In a 2013 interview, Anderson singled out Harper’s 1968 debut album, *Come Out Fighting Genghis Smith*, as one of the most impressive records he had heard. He recalled that Jethro Tull envied Harper’s simple life on the road, while Harper, in turn, envied the wealth and fame of rock stars. Harper’s standing among musicians is reflected in Led Zeppelin’s song “Hats Off to Roy Harper” and his lead vocal on Pink Floyd’s “Have A Cigar”.

In short

  • Ian Anderson praised Roy Harper as an under-recognised musical influence.
