ICC member states have voted to remove chief prosecutor Karim Khan following allegations of sexual misconduct, which he denies. The decision is significant because Khan led the court’s pursuit of arrest warrants against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former defence minister Yoav Gallant, placing his removal at the centre of wider disputes over the court’s work.

Khan had already been suspended after an 18-month investigation into allegations involving a junior lawyer in his office; the ICC’s oversight body found serious misconduct, though a separate review reportedly reached a different evidential conclusion. The court’s 125 member states considered his case at a special session in New York, with 82 reportedly supporting removal; the 2024 warrants against Netanyahu and Gallant remain in force unless ICC judges withdraw them.
