The US Department of Homeland Security has said that Valmir Djempsley, a 20-year-old Haitian man in the country illegally, should not be released after he was charged with fatally stabbing a coworker at a Michigan food processing plant. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has lodged a detainer request asking Michigan authorities not to free him without first notifying the agency, making the case a further example of the Trump administration's push to hold immigrants accused of serious crimes.

Djempsley is charged with the murder of 21-year-old Brandon Eduardo Velasquez Chavez on 30 June at the Clemens Food Group plant in Coldwater. According to authorities, the killing followed an argument during which Djempsley allegedly chased Chavez with a knife and stabbed him in the back; Djempsley claims Chavez headbutted him during the confrontation. Chavez died at the scene. DHS says Djempsley entered the US illegally through Texas in 2024 and was released into the country under the Biden administration, which acting DHS official Lauren Bis blamed for the death. Djempsley has pleaded not guilty.
