Iconic hanging boulder that sat just above hikers’ heads finally crashes to ground 104 years after it was first spotted
The Mysterious Hanging Boulder at Polar Caves Park in Rumney, New Hampshire, fell on 18 October, after standing above a trail for 104 years. The collapse damaged railings near the wooden walkway, and the park has closed temporarily while it assesses the site.
The boulder was described on a nearby sign as weighing 80 tons, with 75 per cent hanging over visitors’ heads; the article also says it weighed more than 100,000 pounds. No one was injured. The park, which draws about 55,000 visitors a year, will review the area during its off-season and plans to welcome visitors back in 2027.
