Ilhan Omar believes Trump raid on home was meant to ‘intimidate and scare people’ from voting
Rep Ilhan Omar said she believes a federal raid on her Washington home was intended to discourage people from voting in the midterm elections. She linked the investigation to what she described as efforts by President Donald Trump’s administration to demonstrate action against alleged voter fraud and appeal to right-wing supporters.
Homeland Security Investigations searched Omar’s home as part of an inquiry into possible immigration fraud, including whether Omar or her father made false statements on citizenship paperwork. Tom Homan said she could be denaturalised if allegations are proven, while Trump said she could face jail. Omar said reports of long early-voting queues and high demand for transport suggested the raid may instead have encouraged people to vote; the White House had not responded to a request for comment.
- Omar says the raid was meant to deter midterm voting.
- The search relates to an investigation into possible immigration fraud.
- She says early-voting turnout suggests the raid may have had the opposite effect.
