Alice Diop’s Paris installation celebrates women artists and consolation

The Guardian ·

French film-maker Alice Diop has created Geste de Consolation, a five-day installation combining film, art, readings, music and dance at Paris’s Palais d’Iéna. It brings together women whose work has influenced and supported her, exploring consolation while giving greater visibility to artists who have been marginalised or underrepresented in France.

The installation includes work by Zanele Muholi and a sculpture by Simone Leigh, alongside writers, composers and historical figures such as Virginia Woolf. Its four main scenarios include a library of texts that visitors can read and relax in; the show occupies the palace’s 60-metre central hall and is presented by Miu Miu during Art Basel week. Diop, whose film Saint Omer received the Silver Lion in 2022, says cinema remains her creative language.

Alice Diop is a French film-maker recognised for her feature Saint Omer, which won the Silver Lion at the Venice Film Festival in 2022. She has created Geste de Consolation, a five-day installation at Paris's Palais d'Iéna that combines film, visual art, readings, music and dance.

The installation explores the theme of consolation by bringing together work by women artists who have influenced Diop, including photographs by Zanele Muholi and a sculpture by Simone Leigh. Visitors will encounter a library of texts, artworks displayed across the palace's 60-metre central hall, and performances by writers, composers and dancers.

The project aims to increase the visibility of women artists who have been underrepresented or marginalised in French cultural institutions. It runs during Art Basel week in Paris, one of the world's major art fairs.
